Intercom Systems

Commercial Intercom Systems in Edmonton

Provide a practical way for visitors to communicate with the appropriate person before entry is granted. Uniservices provides intercom consulting, design, installation, modernization and service for businesses, condominium corporations, apartment-building owners and property managers in Edmonton and across Alberta.

Entrance communication designed around the property

An intercom system should reflect how visitors arrive, who answers calls and how entry decisions are handled. A properly planned system brings together the entrance station, approved user endpoints, door-release functions where included, power, communications and supporting cabling required for the property.

Depending on the selected system and approved scope, an intercom project may include:

  • audio communication at one or more entrances;
  • video communication where supported and required;
  • entrance stations selected for the site conditions;
  • approved user endpoints for answering visitor calls;
  • controlled-entry release where compatible and included;
  • directories or call-routing functions supported by the selected system;
  • coordination with access control or video surveillance where compatible.

The design depends on the entrance, number and type of users, property operations, available infrastructure and selected equipment.

Intercom services

Consulting and design

Uniservices reviews the entrances, visitor flow, answering requirements, controlled openings and existing infrastructure before defining the system scope. The design considers entrance stations, user endpoints, door-release requirements, power, communications and supporting cabling.

For a separately scoped assessment, project requirements or system design, see our Consulting & Design service.

Installation and system additions

New intercom systems and additions are installed around the approved design and site conditions. Work may include entrance stations, approved user endpoints, door-release interfaces, power, communications and supporting cabling.

Each function is included only after compatibility and operational requirements are confirmed. Entry release is not assumed merely because an intercom is installed.

Modernization and phased upgrades

An existing intercom system may include useful cabling or other infrastructure alongside equipment that is aging, unsupported or no longer suitable for the property. Uniservices can assess the current system, identify practical reuse opportunities and develop a replacement or phased-upgrade approach.

For projects centred on an aging or end-of-life system, see System Modernization.

Service and maintenance

Uniservices provides intercom troubleshooting, repair and scheduled maintenance. Service may also be available for systems installed by another company, subject to an initial assessment of system condition, compatibility, administrative access and parts or software availability.

Recurring maintenance agreements can be scoped around the property and installed system. Agreement terms, included work and scheduling are defined for each client; no emergency or guaranteed response-time commitment is implied.

Communication and controlled entry

Intercom and access-control functions may work together, but they serve different purposes. The intercom allows a visitor to call an approved user or location. Where compatible and included in the design, the user may then operate a defined door-release function.

The approved project scope may address:

  • which entrances require visitor communication;
  • who or what location receives each call;
  • audio or video functions included in the selected system;
  • directory and call-routing requirements where supported;
  • door-release operation and the controlled opening involved;
  • coordination with access control and door hardware;
  • supporting network, communications, power and cabling;
  • known operational or infrastructure limitations.

An intercom does not replace a complete access-control design. Each related system remains separately assessed and scoped.

Commercial and multi-unit applications

Uniservices works on commercial and building-level intercom projects for businesses, condominium corporations, apartment-building owners and property managers.

Typical applications may include:

  • commercial entrances and reception points;
  • condominium and apartment-building entrances;
  • parkade or vehicle-entry communication points;
  • service, delivery or staff entrances;
  • multiple entrances serving one managed property;
  • additions to an existing intercom system.

The selected approach depends on how visitors arrive and how the property handles entry. Uniservices does not provide individual-home doorbells or consumer residential intercom systems.

Existing systems and contractor takeovers

Uniservices can assess an intercom system installed by another contractor. The first step is to determine its condition, available documentation, administrative access, compatibility and the availability of required parts or software.

After the assessment, Uniservices can explain:

  • which existing components or cabling may remain in service;
  • which items require repair or replacement;
  • whether the system can be expanded;
  • whether a phased upgrade is practical;
  • whether door-release or related interfaces can remain in use;
  • what information or access is required before work can proceed.

Assessment does not guarantee that every existing product can be supported or integrated. The recommended next step depends on the system found on site.

Intercom systems often work alongside other building-security systems. Where the equipment and project scope support it, Uniservices can coordinate intercom systems with:

Each system remains separately scoped. Integration is included only after compatibility and project requirements are confirmed.

Our project approach

  1. Understand the entrance process

    We review the entrances, visitor flow, answering requirements, controlled openings and project goals.

  2. Assess existing conditions

    For existing buildings, we examine the installed equipment, available pathways and supporting infrastructure relevant to the project.

  3. Define the scope

    We identify the proposed system, included entrances and functions, required work, known limitations and an appropriate installation or upgrade path.

  4. Install, configure and verify

    Approved work is installed and configured, and the included communication and entry functions are checked against the project scope.

  5. Support the installed system

    After completion, Uniservices can provide on-request service or a separately scoped recurring maintenance agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install intercom systems for individual homes?

No. Uniservices focuses on commercial and building-level systems for businesses, condominium corporations, apartment-building owners and property managers. We do not provide individual-home doorbells or consumer residential intercom systems.

Can you service an intercom installed by another company?

Yes, subject to an initial assessment. Service depends on the system’s condition, compatibility, administrative access and the availability of required parts or software.

Do you install both audio and video intercom systems?

Audio or video communication may be included depending on the property requirements, selected equipment and approved scope. The appropriate system is defined during assessment and design.

Can an intercom release a controlled door?

It may be possible when the selected intercom, door hardware and related systems are compatible. The door-release function and controlled opening must be included in the approved design.

Can existing intercom wiring or equipment be reused?

Sometimes. Existing equipment and infrastructure are assessed before reuse is recommended. Components are retained only when their condition, compatibility and role in the proposed system make reuse practical.

Can the system be upgraded in phases?

Sometimes. A phased approach may be practical depending on the existing system, infrastructure, compatibility, property operations and approved project priorities.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance agreements?

Yes. Uniservices can provide recurring maintenance agreements as well as on-request service. The agreement scope and scheduling are defined for the property and installed system.

Discuss Your Intercom Project

Tell us about the property, the entrances involved, how visitors are currently handled, the existing system if there is one, and what you need to accomplish. Uniservices will review the information and identify the appropriate next step.

Do not include access codes, unit directories, passwords or other sensitive security information.
